After guiding hundreds of anglers across Vietnam’s mangrove forests, oyster farms and wild coastal waters, I’ve learned that you don’t need dozens of lure boxes to consistently catch barramundi. In fact, most days I rely on just a handful of confidence lures that have proven themselves time and time again.
These aren’t theoretical recommendations—they’re the same lures I carry on every charter and trust when my clients are chasing wild barramundi.

What Makes a Good Barramundi Lure?
Barramundi are aggressive predators, but they can also be incredibly selective. Water clarity, tide movement, light levels and fishing pressure all influence what they’ll eat.
The best lures imitate the baitfish found throughout southern Vietnam while allowing you to fish effectively around mangrove roots, oyster racks and shallow coastal flats.
Although countless lures will catch barramundi, these five have consistently outperformed everything else in my tackle box.

1. Duel Yo-Zuri L-Bass Jerkbait 80SP ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My number one confidence lure.
If I could only bring one lure to Vietnam, this would be it.
The Duel L-Bass 80SP has caught my personal best barramundi, my personal best mangrove jack, and countless fish during guided trips. Its suspending action allows it to remain in the strike zone during long pauses—exactly when barramundi often decide to attack.
My favourite retrieve is simple:
Twitch… twitch… pause.
Many strikes come while the lure is sitting completely still.
My favourite colour by far is Gold Tiger, especially in stained water and low-light conditions.
This is the exact technique I teach during our Mangrove Forest Fishing Charter, and it’s responsible for many of our biggest barramundi each season.

- Mangrove forests
- Creek mouths
- Fallen timber
- Calm water
- Fishing around structure
2. Duo Realis Jerkbait 80SP ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Duo Realis is another outstanding suspending jerkbait that has earned a permanent place in my tackle box.
Compared to the L-Bass, it has a slightly different action and profile, making it an excellent option when fish become cautious or heavily pressured.
Whenever barramundi are following but refusing another jerkbait, switching to the Duo Realis often makes the difference.
Like the L-Bass, fish it with long pauses.
Patience catches barramundi.
3. Duel Yo-Zuri L-Bass Popper 65F ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
Few things in fishing are more exciting than watching a barramundi explode on a surface lure.
The L-Bass Popper has become my favourite topwater lure thanks to its compact size and easy action.
I usually throw it:
- Early morning
- Late afternoon
- Overcast days
- Calm water
Long pauses between pops can be just as important as the pops themselves.
Sometimes the biggest surface strikes happen after you’ve stopped moving the lure completely.
4. Stabi Shad Slim Paddle Tail (3.5–4″) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Soft plastics are incredibly versatile and often save the day when fish don’t want hardbaits.
A 3.5–4 inch paddle tail closely matches the size of the baitfish barramundi feed on throughout southern Vietnam.
They’re effective whether rigged on jigheads or weedless hooks around heavy structure.
When conditions are tough, slowing down your retrieve with a soft plastic often produces bites when faster-moving lures don’t.

5. Daiwa Flat Junkie Duckfin Shad R 9cm ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
When I’m targeting bigger fish or fishing deeper water, this lure is always within reach.
The Duckfin Shad has an excellent swimming action and produces plenty of vibration without appearing unnatural.
It performs exceptionally well around channels, deeper edges and areas with stronger tidal flow.
Paired with an appropriately weighted jighead, it’s one of my favourite soft plastics for consistently catching quality barramundi.
Choosing the Right Colour
While anglers often obsess over colour, presentation is usually far more important.
That said, these colours consistently produce fish in Vietnam:
- Gold
- Natural baitfish patterns
- White
- Chartreuse for dirty water
If I had to choose only one, I’d still reach for Gold Tiger.
Retrieval Is More Important Than the Lure
One of the biggest mistakes I see is retrieving lures too quickly.
Barramundi often strike during the pause, especially with suspending jerkbaits.
Slow down.
Give the lure time to suspend.
Trust the pause.
Many of the biggest fish I’ve guided clients into have eaten a lure that wasn’t moving at all.
